Women and Political Parties in Italy and Europe: Masculine Democracy
Del Re, Alisa
Women and Political Parties in Italy and Europe: Masculine Democracy - 2011.
43
Political parties are one of the most obvious and at the same most opaque obstacles for women’s political involvement because they are based historically, just like today, on men’s relations between themselves. This article relates the birth, the structuring and the changes in party functioning from a gender standpoint. It also looks at the coherence between their intervention and their internal structure, in the light of the principle of equality and non-discrimination contained in all the European Constitutions. The analysis, for which structural data is lacking, is centred on Italy and the European Union, and emphasizes the specific responsibility of political parties in the development of a single-sex democracy.
