This article explores the way in which police statistics treat the question of violence against women, which does not appear specifically in the annual publications of crime figures. These figures represent the principal data available to political decision-makers on law and order. An analysis of the conditions in which they are produced shows the subjective character of the data provided. Far from being simply forgotten, violences against women are hidden by a deliberate attempt at invisibilisation and depoliticisation which means it does not emerge as a priority for public action.
