This article focuses on the rhetoric of mystical attribution in the làmb (wrestling with punches) milieu in Dakar. The statements of different agents concerning the “mystical” are considered as efforts to assert, reveal and reorganize social positions and power relations. The first part describes some situations in which the “mystical” register is mediated via the mass media. The second part centers on “mystical” tactics and strategies enacted in an écurie (wrestling gym). The juxtaposition of these enunciations produces a “counter shot,” enabling us to grasp some performative aspects of this discourse, formerly in the shadows in studies on the subject.
