From the pseudo-mediation of alcohol to therapeutic mediations - 2016.

The authors discuss alcohol as an object, sometimes used as pseudo-mediation, opposed to classical therapeutic mediation. Therapeutic mediation is based upon the creation of a transitional space (Winnicott) enabling the sedation of anguish but also authorizing a psychological readjustment, according to McDougall’s theory. Pseudo-mediation through alcohol helps individuals to cope with anxiety due to drive emersions, as an immediate process but without any specific elaboration. From the examples brought up during workshops but also during individual therapies, the authors question the psychological mechanisms at stake when alcohol is replaced by a mediated object. They hypothesize that mediation activity materialized by specific objects could help individuals to take a step back from pseudo-mediation through alcohol, in particular due to its supportive effect regarding mental representations.
