The heuristic value of a psycho-analytic symptomatology, in the literal sense of a theory and logic of the symptom in psychoanalysis, becomes clear if we connect this symptomatology to two other major modes of knowledge organization in the clinical field: the classification of signs-symptoms (DSM III and following, for instance) and dynamic psychopathology. In the context of Bachelard’s notion of epistemological obstacle, far from being outdated, the articulation between, and the specificity of each of these three discursive modalities can be considered. In this way we argue that this complex symptomatology is necessary and justifiable, particularly today.
