Seizing on the case of an Iraqi woman who was the victim of rape, the author explains the reasons for his disagreement with the application of the myth of Amphitryon (where desire and pleasure go hand in hand with the lure) to the violence done by the rapist to the psyche and the body of his victim. The Arabic term for rape ( ightisâb) literally means the annihilation of the psyche. This annihilation, a kind of displaced matricide, produces a subjective eradication, agonistic experiences, narcissistic pain, post-traumatic psychoses…. In light of this clinical study, the author reviews the concept of trauma as it appears in the theories of René Roussillon, and recalls that most psychoanalytic work considers the crime from the perspective of the criminal: fascination for the criminal, the failure of narcissism, the link with the perceptual, the sensorimotor, the cruelty of death…. Faced with an overwhelming lived experience, the analyst draws on the imaginative and figurative resources of hysteria in order to be able to associate and to bring the unconscious content to the surface. In such extreme clinical work, we need the resources of hysteria.
