Adolescents in serious trouble repeatedly break bonds and undermine the institutional spaces offered to them to respond to their distress. In this article, the author proposes a way to understand the compulsion to break ties. He formulates several hypotheses to open the subject of the paradoxical conditions for taking up the intersubjective encounter once again with subjects who often cause despair to the care-taking or socio-educative professionals and teams.
