Quest for relief supposes that it is possible to go back into an idealised past when person was neither ill nor in pain. However, it is impossible to erase all the things that chronic pain has changed in the person’s life. How to overcome a loss that has never fully occurred and that remains unresolved? Image of relief is a “trompe-l’oeil” that is reassuring and, at the same time, enclosing and dangerous. How can we get out of the mirage of relief when it maintains the conflict between the self and the pain?
