Breaking the news in prenatal medicine is an everyday concern for parents-to-be and birth professionals. It can reflect many situations, from the initial diagnosis of a pregnancy to the discovery of a fetal malformation, or the diagnosis of maternal hypertension. Each situation is unique, but the consequences are many. The reception of the news is related to the particular history of each family, as well as to the practitioner’s experience and thinking. Although medical studies provide little training on how to break news, practitioners can draw on a few landmark references. They will be mentioned in this paper. The aim of this paper is to allow therapeutic care to continue with the patient and his/her family after breaking the news in prenatal care.
