Actors at the bar, or, inventing the modern lawyer - 2017.

Liberal social reformers in eighteenth-century France wished to introduce a new way to carry out justice, by bringing to criminal trials a theretofore unknown antagonistic dimension, complete with spectators and performing lawyers. Such deliberate theatricalization of the judicial process completely changed the role of the attorney and generated much anxiety, palpable in debates that had not been studied until now. Should lawyers study with actors? Should they represent a culprit whom they believe to be guilty? I conclude that the modern lawyer figure was a product of this clash between opposing visions, one staunchly antitheatrical, the other unabashedly dramatic.
