When a child announces his or her homosexuality to the parents, the latter often feel as though a kind of shock wave had welled up, bringing with it anger, guilt and incomprehension, whereas for the homosexual child, after years of suffering and dissimulation, coming out can be a tremendous release. How can parents confronted by this painful and traumatic experience be brought to overcome their prejudices ? How can dialogue be restored for it to play a constructive role ? The period we live in invites us, following on from Freud and Lacan and with the powerful tools they availed us with, to think out what makes for the crux of homophobia. What does psychoanalysis teach us about homosexuality ?
