Based on an ethnographic study of five nanoscience laboratories in France and the United States, this article examines ways the law enters everyday scientific practices through security issues and risk management. Nanoparticles carry risk and their production or manipulation often involves possible health hazards. By analyzing the legal dimension, which contributes to the statutory existence of the risks associated with nanomaterials, and then studying researchers’ daily risk management practices, the article highlights the tension between legal and heteronomous rules, scientific expertise, and the difficult work of safety engineers to manage risk in these specific workplaces.
