The ecological imaginary of the Yellow Vests movement - 2021.

37

This article proposes to politically situate the Yellow vests movement according to their ecological imaginaries. Unlike the Promethean imaginaries promoted by part of the political left and which, through the green city in particular, advocate technical solutions and a planning rationality in the face of the ecological crisis, the actions developed by the Yellow vests movement aim less to modify their environment than to take care of it. The environment is thus first experienced and familiar, and the vision of ecology is constructed from socio-economic conditions and ways of inhabiting peripheral spaces. This situated and practical ecology is based on values drawing on popular cultures and relational solidarities: decency, dignity, simplicity and sobriety. This results in a reinvestment of local places and their social times, far from the sense of assignment in which the dominant discourses lock them. The imaginaries and ecological practices of the Yellow vests movement then contribute to questioning the different ecologies in tension, particularly the dominant one of large metropolitan areas… far from roundabouts.
