Parenthood in Danger: Seriously Traumatized Mothers and Transmission of Trauma to the Child - 2010.

32

This paper examines the possible traumatic transmission from the mother to a child who has not been directly exposed to traumatizing events. It is based on a clinical case. This paper deals with treatment and prevention. The frame of the care is ethno-psychiatric. The complementary approach enabled accounting for psychic and cultural elements of the story of the mother in order to understand the place of the child in the psychic economy of the mother. It sheds light on the ways in which traumatic transmission occurs in the mother-baby relationship. This paper approaches this issue by means of attachment theory and hypothesizes that the pathological childhood material, exacerbated by the psychological trauma, paves the way for fearful maternal expressions and becomes a potential channel for traumatic transmission from mother to infant. This paper emphasizes clinical work in an ethno-psychoanalytical frame, but also looks at the benefits of network work.
