For over a century, one of the major established facts in the history and sociology of deviant acts is that delinquency and criminality is a phenomenon mainly among males. Despite the media coverage of an assumed rise in violence among girls, women and especially female teenagers largely remain a minority in illegal passages to the act. This article reviews this difference and aims to understand and discuss the reasons for it.
