Recent, the notion of awkward age has been introduced into contemporary psychopedagogical writing to describe a clinical situation frequently observed in young adolescents. First studied by neuro-cognitivists, psychoanalysts specialized in adolescence have developed the idea of the working of silliness set up as a defense mechanism before the threat of the loss of infantile positions inherent to adolescence, a sort of emergency recourse when the actual possibilities of the child to deal with his emotional turmoil are momentarily or more lastingly overwhelmed.
