Mother tongue in migration: The ingredients of a harmonious miscegenation - 2020.

The mother tongue of children whose parents come from elsewhere condenses many ingredients of family transmission. It is both a tool and an object of transmission, and the children’s mastery of it leads them towards bilingualism and cultural experience, both affective and cognitive, bringing them many benefits. Not all the children, however, who grow up in a multilingual context are able to invest interest in it, or turn away from it. In migration, minority languages resist more or less well depending on the social and cultural practices of the families, and they often disappear over several generations. However, from one generation to another, these languages and their transmission reflect the vitality of the affective relations and affiliations within the family. For clinicians, then, this is an important marker to consider in caring for our young patients.
