The verb “to know” takes on multiple meanings when it is used in clinical work with adopted children, both for the children and parents as well as for the carers. During consultations in an adoption service we regularly observe how the constraints of learning in adopted children result in mental destabilization. What will the consequences be for them when transmission is inhibited, when what dominates is the secret, and when one does not know everything about one’s own history? Why are some adopted children prevented from learning? Is learning not a way of knowing? And what is the role played by the desire to learn and the desire to know?
