This article presents “New Travellers” in the UK as a contemporary offshoot of British counterculture. Many New Travellers adopt a nomadic lifestyle after finding themselves in a situation of economic and/or social hardship. This nomadic lifestyle, with its alternative approach to social space and land use, leads to the creation of “communities of practice” (Wenger 1999). The main aim of New Travellers is the satisfaction of their needs, which can be defined as “radical needs” in the Marxist sense of the term. Using fieldwork and data from the 1990s, this article shows that, taken together, the notions of “communities of practice” and “radical needs” are essential in explaining New Travellers’ way of life.
