The increase in the sorting and sale of recoverable waste, popularly called “cartoneo”, in Argentina after the post-2001 crisis, shaped a novel scenario of urban coexistence based on the daily presence of cartoneros (litter pickers) in wealthy neighbourhoods. Drawing on this event, the article analyses the genesis of a problem based on the everyday dichotomy between “respectable” residents (vecino) and litter pickers (cartonero). It describes the emergence of a metaphor of “invasion”, presents the main stages and scenarios of interaction, and compares different attitudes adopted by neighbourhood groups and public authorities.
