Sociologists, geographers and ethnologists restrict the study of tourism to the negative impact it has or is supposed to have on host societies. But tourism can also have beneficial effects and its absence can be a serious handicap. The author, an historian, shows that in the long run tourism integrates native populations into new human groups. The problematics of tourism cannot therefore be reduced to that of impact.
