Sharing daily family time with adolescents is always marked by tensions. On the one hand, these moments are controlled by parental rules governing life in common and teenagers have to keep to their set place within a family hierarchy. On the other hand, shared moments can also be times when the teenager’s individuality is acknowledged, building family togetherness. In this case, the teenager can partake of a relation based on a more egalitarian relationship. The duality of these moments in families with teenagers is best understood through the concept of being “free together”.
