Libertarianism and paternalism are apparently contradictory, the former upholding individual freedom, the latter aimed at protecting people from themselves. Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler’s theory of « libertarian paternalism » nevertheless associate the two terms, in the name of social welfare.
