Mystical experiences are outside the realm of traditional theological categories. Michel de Certeau, in his books on mysticism, seeks to describe such experiences by approaching them through the prism of the social sciences, while preserving the peculiarity of the mystical subject. This approach is characteristic of his work in general, for he always chose to remain on the margin, to analyze a subject using different tools, refusing to adopt a unifying and overarching perspective.
