In 2017, a smart farming platform project was launched in Switzerland with the aim of centralizing data and thus simplifying administrative work for farmers. Support for the project was far from unanimous. Drawing on fieldwork conducted with farmers, government officials and leaders of private organizations in the Swiss agricultural sector, this article analyses why it was unsuccessful. The field actors identified that the platform did not sufficiently account for their socio-technical configurations, specifically their data practices. These findings lead us to question two assumptions made about digital agriculture within social sciences research: first, the passivity of the State in relation to these developments, and second, their feasibility.
