Thanks to experts at the Commissariat du Plan and the Fonds national de la productivité, the Centre de recherche et de documentation sur la consummation (Crédoc) (Center for Research and Documentation on Consumption) was created in 1953 in order to compensate for the French delay in measuring consumption. While it was designed in the intention of rebuilding and modernizing France, the Crédoc studies, based on innovative methods, also enabled technocrats and bosses to better understand the behavior of French households and the characteristics of a growing consumer society.
