This paper aims at situating the emergence of the notion of phallus in the history of Lacan’s though, as well as specifying its importance with regards to the theory of the Oedipus, castration, sexual difference and discontent amongst genders. It will lead us to understand why Lacan makes Medea into the real woman and Hamlet into the paradigm of the modern man, or the “prince of fantoms” hindered in his act.
