This text continues the debates that ensued following the publication of Danièle Brun’s book La passion dans l’amitié. During these discussions, Danièle Brun called upon a historical analysis of the different conceptions of “friendship” and “love”. The article explores the distinctions between ancient and modern friendships by analyzing the lexicon of love and friendship in the Greek and Latin worlds, with implications for our culture. It also references models of friendship dating back to antiquity, which are often mentioned by Freud. This text reiterates the idea that ancient love transitions from the sensory to the intellectual, drawing from Greek and Latin philosophies. It also discusses the connection between love, beauty, knowledge, and the pursuit of inner and cosmic unity. Montaigne, in a modern context, introduces friendship as a community of spirits. This discussion highlights the prominence of the intellect in modern love, influenced by Freud. It concludes by suggesting that the modern conception of friendship and love is centered on the search for traces of initial pleasurable experiences, introducing the quest for the lost object and reflecting a new understanding of love.
