Consuming differently . . . without changing the institutions. A consumers’ cooperative in Lille - 2019.

Superquinquin is a consumers’ cooperative located in Lille, which at the end of 2018 had more than 1,200 members. This article reflects on how its “promise of difference” has been institutionalized (Le Velly, 2017). The cooperative, inspired by the Park Slope Food Coop model, which is based on the voluntary work of its socially diverse members and offers a wide range of products, which differentiates it from a traditional supermarket or an organic grocery store. The fieldwork highlights the tensions between the highly territorialized modes of regulation and the forms of bureaucratization and isomorphism observed in similar experiences.
