The strength of attachment in mobilization: The evolution and politicization of place attachments in planning conflicts - 2022.

This paper explores the role of place attachment in collective mobilization in cases of disputes over development projects in certain spaces, based on the notion of informed resistance. An analysis of three resistance movements to different types of infrastructure (highway, prison, landfill) over the long term leads to the following results: (1) place attachments play an important role in mobilization; (2) place attachments evolve during mobilizations (through interactive loops between attachments and social and spatial dynamics); (3) place attachments can participate in the politicization of movements. The discussion of this article proposes a framework for understanding the evolution of place attachment in planning conflict, based on three stages: (1) emotional clashing and individual anchoring; (2) social and spatial translation of attachments; (3) interactions between local and global attachments.
