This article looks at the social history of the ownership and exploitation of a pine forest located in an eponymous commune – Saint-Brévin-les-Pins – in the final decades of the 19th century and examines its genesis and institutionalization as common property. Based on an exploration of departmental and national archives documenting the social categories involved in this history, the article examines the localized creation of common property, showing that the pine forest and its control were highly contentious matters, as ruling classes fought over political domination and the control of local sociabilities.
