This article seeks to explore the tensions surrounding the death penalty by looking at correspondence between the British administrators of Somaliland and the Colonial Office. Introduced at quite a late stage, the death penalty quickly provoked disputes and criticisms throughout the colonial society and became the center of a dynamic to reform the local penal system. Having proved difficult to implement, it raises questions regarding the power of the colonial administration to apply penal law to colonized populations.
