Among the technological novelties introduced during the Second World War, three can be described as revolutionary, so important was their strategic involvement: the jet engine that opened up new perspectives for military and later civil aviation; the ballistic missile that brought the world into the space age; and the destructive power of a weapon that introduced the world to nuclear warfare. That France could be among the small number of nations capable of implementing these new technologies may seem paradoxical, given the fact that its scientific and technical development was stopped with the defeat of?1940.
