The economic, social, and mental upheavals in Madagascar during the Second World War caused by the principles inherent in the national revolution and by changes in economic objectives, led the Malagasy people to oppose the oppressive policy carried out by the French colonizers. Resistance movements, however, remained isolated and inadequately organized. Soon after the war, opposition movements increased in various forms.
