For Kimura Bin, “the way we experience time is the foundation of our experience and gives direction to the meaning of our own being”. A profound imbalance in the importance given to the past, present or future, and associated forms of anguish, characterize each type of mental pathology: anguish in anticipation of the future, known as “ante fatum” (schizophrenia, early neurosis); anguish in maintaining the present, with reference to the past, known as “post fatum” (melancholia); anguish that can only be calmed by immediate satisfaction, known as “intra fatum” (mania, drug addiction, borderline personalities).
