Based on a questionnaire survey carried out at a center for social work training, this article demonstrates the gaps that may appear between the ideal of involvement, the form it takes within a legislative framework, and its practical implementation. In the light of these three dimensions, participation appears both as an old ideal and as innovative. We then discuss the challenges of participation in the social field, which begin with initial training.
