Work on the notion of “de-taking” (a French notion that goes beyond that of disengagement) in the aging process focuses on exploring how an aging person makes a number of negotiations to rearrange his or her daily life, coping with the physical and cognitive losses associated with aging. This article seeks to shed light on suicide in the light of the concept of “de-taking,” i.e., how the decided and anticipated suicide of an aging person is an act of ultimate control over his or her life and death.
