For an ethics of dependence

For an ethics of dependence - 2024.

22

The novels by Olivia Rosenthal (2007), Delphine de Vigan (2019) and Maylis Besserie (2020), respectively On n’est pas là pour disparaître, Les gratitudes and Le tiers temps, offer stories in which the main character has a physical or cognitive disorder; set in nursing homes (Ehpad), the stories’ plots are underpinned by this character’s dependency. The way in which these plots explore the links between ordinary, everyday life and dependency reveals the role of language and the risks characters face of being reduced to just a body, as their dependency, once overlooked, becomes the only thing people see. The various enunciative and narrative tools used in these novels underline three strategies that contribute to an ethics of dependence: the distance of humor, the reciprocity of dependence, and the search for enunciative independence.
