The socio-health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an awareness of the scarcity of staff in long-term care facilities (LTCs) in Quebec – equivalent to the EHPAD in France – and resulted in the observation of organizational mistreatment. In response, the government quickly implemented various remedies, including offering an abbreviated training program to recruit 10,000 new professional caregivers (PC), referred to as “ aides-soignants” in France. This condensed training covers eight of the fifteen actual competencies required of PCs. This article, based on an analysis of government, journalistic, and academic documents, casts a critical eye on the expected benefits and pitfalls of this solution and proposes ways to diminish potential harm. The contribution of these newly trained PCs is intended to improve the working conditions of current employees, support the stabilization of healthcare teams, and contribute to an improved quality of healthcare and other services for LTC residents. However, the abbreviated program does not include the acquisition of certain relational competencies, such as those addressing actions to counter mistreatment.
