From a geopolitical standpoint, the English language has been a success story based on British political victories against the ambitions of continental powers in Europe while imposing its rule over the greatest Empire ever seen. Moreover, English, also being the language of the hegemonic power of the United States, has become the lingua franca of our time. The French language is fighting a rearguard action to delay the triumph of English. While remaining, to some extent, a language of democracy and of non-conformism, English has now completely invaded the homes of other peoples. English has become a necessity if one wishes to pursue a career in industry or finance, or in any major company anywhere in the world.
