The Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Indus: these three major rivers of South Asia represent central waterways in the region and nearly 700 million people depend on these rivers for their water needs. These transboundary rivers are at the core of important geopolitical competition between the riparian states concerned. China and India in particular are two great rival economic powers that rely heavily on the control of water resources through the implementation of facilities such as dams or diversion channels. In this article, we will look at water as a strategic resource and see to what extent it is at the heart of issues of sharing and control in South Asia. We will try to analyze how the problems of use and distribution of water resources on the scale of these large transboundary rivers highlights the rivalries between regional powers.
