Should one be surprised that there still is a population with a French culture in North America, particularly after two centuries of Anglo-Saxon linguistic pressure? Let’s quickly brush up on the history of the colonisation of French America from 1608 to the present day. The Québécois do not feel French in France nor do they feel American in the US! An awkward predicament to be in, which has resulted in their becoming a people of go-betweens or interpreters. Their ambiguous position in the Great American landscape has made them highly creative in the field of culture and international relations – quite a paradox in a country with a large number of “protectionist” laws.
