What Was at Stake When Recruiting a Schoolmaster (1411–1412) - 2009.
72
In 1411, a dispute erupted between the inhabitants of Villers-sur-Mer (Calvados) and the bishop of Lisieux, lord of the neighboring town, over the designation of the schoolmaster, heretofore the province of the community. The bishop declared that he wanted to close the school, while the inhabitants insisted on their immemorial right to nominate the master. This conflict, which was eventually ended through an agreement recorded by tabellion, brings to light the extent to which the Church was trying to better control rural centers of education, and the capacity of resistance of local communities. Contextualized with other sources from Normandy, this source alo reveals the importance of the network of schools which had been set up in medieval Normandy.
