93

This article presents the history of the reception of the music of Robert Schumann (1810-1856) in Japan, with reference to both the social context and the ways that musicians have changed since Western music started to be accepted there. Two international pianists are interviewed, which leads to an additional exploration of how Schumann’s music is interpreted in this era of globalization and how this relates to its reception in Japan.
