The turn-of-the-century era or Belle Époque was a particularly intense period of working-class demands in France. Rural regions were just as active in this regard, as shown by the iconic winegrowers' revolts in the South of France. In the forested areas of the Landes, the gemmeurs, also called résiniers [resin tappers], organized and structured their group through the creation of trade unions. They ended up launching several massive protest movements in 1906 and 1907, upsetting an ancient and complex set of social relationships. While trying to improve their situation, these workers of the forests also built a new identity for themselves.
