A suffering spectacle and distanced from society: The walking horror of the Nazi death marches that occurred during the last year of the Second World War is increasingly well known to scholars and the public alike. Marched hundreds of kilometers under violent and environmentally bitter conditions, former concentration camp victims symbolized a walking humanitarian catastrophe. This article probes how scholars are yet to fully interpret the mobile persecution and impact of these marches.
