In the French national unconscious, the Vichy regime, with its principles compromised by its collaboration with the Nazi occupying forces and the excesses of the “national revolution,” remains a deep wound that continues to weaken the cohesion of the national fabric, where patriotism acts as the cement. How, in a world that has changed so much, can events that took place seven decades ago still be relevant today? Quite simply in the fact that, at the time, between the “French state” on the one hand, and Free France and the French Resistance on the other, two radically contrasting conceptions of France clearly came up against each other, in a battle in which the very survival of the nation was at stake. Discussing them remains more important than ever in order to gain an accurate understanding of what we call France, as a site for “wanting to live together” that might inspire a form of “patriotism,” which does not imply a divide of any kind.
