The aim of this article is to re-examine the concept of introspection, which remains a clinical concept frequently used in psychology of a somewhat psychodynamic or psychoanalytic bent. This idea of introspection is usually linked to a conception of the unconscious, a kind of memory beyond consciousness, located somewhere in the brain. This article aims to show that, for at least three important psychoanalysts, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Jacques Schotte, the object of psychoanalysis is not this unconscious, with reality or hidden fantasies hidden or buried in the maze of memory.
