The psychiatrist’s certificate: From art to technology

The psychiatrist’s certificate: From art to technology - 2022.

Starting from Paul Guiraud’s ideas, who made an art out of Clérambault’s handwritten certificates, we propose a review of the historical evolution of psychiatric certificates in France. We observe an increase in both the number of certificates and the range of people to whom they were addressed, in the context of a hospital and administrative system in crisis, which substantially affected the conditions under which they were written. From the debates led by Henri Ey in the 1960s to “revoke the 1938 law,” to the latest legal modifications, we retrace the most important changes that have taken place and look at how they have influenced the more technological way in which certificates are written today.
