How Does Science Create the World while it is Describing it
Flahault, François
How Does Science Create the World while it is Describing it - 2016.
62
Economic sciences describe and prescribe. Why are these two roles mixed in this case when they are always distinguished in other sciences? To answer this question, the author starts by reminding us of the distinction between acts that are performed explicitly and acts that are performed implicitly, this being done by descriptive enunciations, as it is the case in economic theories. Then, using the examples of socio-cosmic representations in Ancient Egypt and of medieval theology, the author shows how these societies had to refer to an order which is, and which is what it should be. The general thesis of the essay is that human societies must necessarily imagine and create a shared world, and that to ensure its credibility, they have to pretend that they never created it in the first place.
